Marc Pascal's Award-Winning Pendant Light Inspired by Nature

Marc Pascal's design journey began with the sight of a leafy sea dragon in its natural habitat. The creature's ability to blend into seaweed forests with its ornate frills, and its dignified demeanor despite its decorative form, sparked Pascal's imagination. He sought to create a pendant light that would encapsulate the creature's playful and sensuous nature, resulting in the Leefy See Dragon.

The Leefy See Dragon is a departure from Pascal's previous lighting designs, yet it is a return to his design roots. The pendant light's organic form is sophisticated yet simple, echoing the lines of the ceramic forms Pascal designed earlier in his career. The result is a luminaire that quintessentially reflects Pascal's unique design style.

The design process involved wooden models, computer models made in Rhino and T-Splines, and 3D printing. The body of the light is rotationally moulded in Forton and infilled with urethane foam for strength and lightness. The nodes were created in Rhino and the pattern 3D printed to create more moulds. The light is made to order in any color, offering clients a wide range of customization options.

The Leefy See Dragon is not just a light fixture, but a dramatic focal point in any space. Its dynamic form makes it appealing in both lit and unlit states. The body can be colored by carefully mixing pigments added to the Forton, giving a very sensuous, smooth, and satin finish. The nodes can be removed and changed as new node shapes are developed, giving the client many options for their made-to-order light.

The Leefy See Dragon's design journey began in 2012 and was completed in June 2016 in Pascal's studio in Melbourne, Australia. Despite the challenges encountered, such as the need for the light to be lightweight and strong, Pascal's constant experimentation with techniques and materials led to a successful outcome. The light was awarded the Golden A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2017, a testament to Pascal's prodigy and wisdom in design.
